What Causes the Perseids?

The Perseids occur when Earth passes through the trail of dust left behind

by Comet 109P/Swift–Tuttle.

As these tiny particles enter our atmosphere at speeds

of nearly 59 kilometres per second,

they burn up,

creating the brilliant flashes we know as shooting stars.

​​
